Building Workflows

The Workflow Editor allows you to create automated customer journeys by combining triggers, conditions, steps, and actions. Whether you're displaying a simple welcome popup or creating a multi-step campaign, workflows help ensure visitors receive the right message at the right time.

For an overview of the Workflow Editor interface, see Workflow Editor Overview.

Before You Begin

Before building a workflow, make sure you have:

For a complete campaign setup process, see Quick Start Guide.

Workflow Structure

Workflow Structure

Every workflow follows the same basic structure:

Trigger
    ↓
Condition (Optional)
    ↓
Step
    ↓
Visitor Interaction
    ↓
Action
    ↓
Next Step or End Campaign

You can add multiple conditions, actions, and steps to create more advanced customer journeys.

For more information about how these elements work together, see Conditions and Actions.

Step 1: Choose a Trigger

Choose a Trigger

Every workflow starts with a Trigger.

Select the event that should start your campaign.

Examples include:

  • Page Load
  • Click Event
  • Time Delay
  • Scroll Depth
  • Exit Intent
  • Custom Event

Configure any available trigger settings, such as delay or page targeting.

For more information, see Triggers.

Step 2: Add Conditions (Optional)

Add Conditions

Conditions determine whether a visitor should continue through the workflow.

For example:

  • URL contains /sale
  • Visitor is on a mobile device
  • Visitor is returning
  • Visitor arrived from Google Ads

If the condition is met, the workflow continues. Otherwise, the visitor follows the Otherwise branch or exits the campaign.

See Conditions and Actions for more information about configuring workflow conditions.

Step 3: Create Your First Step

Create Your First Step

A Step contains the content that visitors will see.

This may include:

  • Popup
  • Sticker
  • Buttons
  • Forms
  • Coupon codes
  • Images
  • Text

You can also configure actions for each component within the step.

For information about adding and customizing campaign elements, see Working with Components and Layout & Styling.

Step 4: Configure Actions

Configure Actions

Actions determine what happens after visitors interact with your campaign.

Common actions include:

  • Show another popup
  • Display a sticker
  • Go to another step
  • Finish the campaign
  • Log an event
  • Execute a custom script

Multiple actions can be attached to the same interaction.

For more information, see Conditions and Actions.

Step 5: Add More Steps

Add More Steps

Click Add step to build more complex customer journeys.

Multiple steps allow you to create:

  • Multi-step lead forms
  • Product recommendation flows
  • Coupon redemption journeys
  • Survey campaigns
  • Thank-you screens
  • Follow-up offers

For an example of a multi-stage customer journey, see Build Multi-Step Customer Journeys.

Step 6: Connect Your Workflow

Connect triggers, conditions, and steps to define how visitors move through your campaign.

For example:

Page Load
      ↓
URL contains "/sale"
      ↓
Step 1
      ↓
Coupon copied
      ↓
Step 2
      ↓
Finish Campaign

You can also create branches to guide visitors through different paths based on their actions.

See Building Workflows for more information about connecting workflow elements.

Step 7: Test Your Workflow

Before publishing, verify that:

  • The trigger activates correctly.
  • Conditions behave as expected.
  • Every action leads to the correct step.
  • Buttons, forms, and other interactive components work properly.
  • No workflow paths are left unconnected.

Testing helps ensure visitors experience the workflow exactly as intended.

You can also review your campaign configuration using Campaign Details.

Step 8: Save and Publish

Save and Publish

Once your workflow is complete:

  1. Click Save.
  2. Select Save and publish.
  3. Test the campaign on your website to confirm everything is working correctly.

For additional guidance on setting up your first campaign, see Quick Start Guide.

Example Workflow

The following example shows a simple promotional campaign:

Page Load
      ↓
Wait 8 Seconds
      ↓
URL contains "/summer-sale"
      ↓
Display Discount Popup
      ↓
Visitor Clicks "Get Coupon"
      ↓
Copy Coupon Code
      ↓
Show Thank You Step
      ↓
Finish Campaign

You can combine workflows with Promote Products & Special Offers to create promotional experiences or Recover Abandoned Carts for ecommerce recovery scenarios.

Workflow Tips

  • Start with a simple workflow and expand it only when necessary.
  • Use conditions to target the right audience instead of creating duplicate campaigns.
  • Keep each step focused on a single goal.
  • Use meaningful step names to make larger workflows easier to manage.
  • Test every workflow after making changes and before publishing.
  • Review campaign performance after launch using Analytics Overview.
